Troop 919 Notes 9-18-2011

Awesome Scouting Weekend – Our Troop enjoyed an awesome weekend at Mt. Rodgers and Grayson Highlands. Our 2012 Philmont crew completed their first shakedown in preparation for their trip to Scouting’s Paradise next summer. And four Scouts made their first backpacking trip with our Troop.

Many thanks to everyone who helped get us there and participated on the hikes. It was a great weekend to be in the “Highlands.”

Eagle Project Workday – Avery C. has scheduled a workday for this Eagle Scout project on Saturday, September 24 at Prince Ibraham Elementary School (5036 Old Walkertown Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27105) beginning at 9 AM. Avery will be providing pizza and drinks for lunch!

Adults: Please bring rakes, gloves, weed eater or chainsaw
Scouts: Please bring rakes, gloves, and your willingness to be helpful

Tents are Drying – There are a lot of tents drying out from the weekend in our Scout Hut. If you were on the trip this weekend, please plan to arrive by 7 PM on Tuesday to help put away the tents and tarps used this weekend. If you see some of the folks from the Venture Crew, ask them to stop by and help as well.

Troop Elections – Our Troop elections are Tuesday night. Be sure to attend and have a voice in selecting your Troop leadership for the next term.

There are several Scouts who need to hold a key leadership or position of Responsibility for rank advancement. Be sure to carefully check your advancement progress in your Scout handbook and determine if this applies to you. In most cases you need to hold a position of responsibility while in a certain rank. This requirement does not carry over from rank to rank.

Also, one of the commitments you are making as a leader in our Troop is to participate in our trips and the youth leadership training session.

Popcorn Kickoff Meeting – Our 2011 popcorn kickoff meeting will be Tuesday, September 27 at 7:30 PM in the Fellowship Hall at Brookstown United Methodist Church. Each Scout is asked to bring at least one adult with them to this meeting as Mr. Essex unveils the plans for this year’s sale.

Mr. Essex also reminded Scouts that online sales are available now via the Trails End website. He provided everyone with a handout at last week’s meeting.

Take Order popcorn sales begin on October 1.

OA Fall Fellowship – If are a youth or adult member of Wahissa Lodge, you should be planning to attend the lodge’s Fall Fellowship this weekend at Camp Raven Knob.

If you are eligible for Brotherhood, there will be Brotherhood questioning and ceremony on Saturday.

District Camporee – Our next camping trip is the Piedmont District’s "Honoring America's Military Veterans" on Oct 21-23, 2011. We will have sign-up for this trip at Tuesday’s Scout Meeting.

There will be lots of inter-patrol competition at the Camporee and we will spend the next several Scout meetings sharpening our skills for the Camporee competitions.

The final time to sign up for the Camporee is at our Troop meeting on Oct. 11.

Also, there is an activity consent form that requires your parent’s consent and signature that must be turned in by Oct. 11.

Scout Hut Workday – There is a workday planned at our Scout Hut on October 15. We will have several Scout and Adult ready projects ready for this day and encourage everyone’s participation.
