Troop 919 Notes 9-27-2010

It’s Popcorn Time!

Reminder…….our Troop’s annual popcorn sale kickoff meeting is Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at Brookstown United Methodist Church.

We ask that each Scout family be represented and that at least one adult from each adult

attend this important meeting. Plus our popcorn kernels have a few surprises in store for us tomorrow night. Word is there may be some sample popcorn and refreshments!

We depend heavily on the annual popcorn sale to fund our Scouting activities for the year. The proceeds of your hard work helps to maintain our Scout Hut, purchase equipment, provide the rank badges and merit badges and fund most of our camping fees. A large part of the money we make on the popcorn sale funds the Scout Accounts that help pay for your summer camp at Camp Raven Knob!

Trail’s End is even better this year! The popcorn maker has managed to take the best popcorn on the market and made it even better. Not only better, but better for you, better tasting, and with an average of 20% more of it in each package!

For your popcorn customers, that’s going to be the most healthy product available on the market, that tastes even better and has more in each package. For Scouts, parents and leaders it’s all of the above, plus better Scout rewards and better program support.

The first day to sell popcorn is Friday. Scouts who have the best results are the one who hit their neighborhoods early.

And finally, our popcorn Kernels have some really cool sales incentives that will be unveiled Tuesday night. Be sure to be at the popcorn meeting!!!!

Vienna Civic Club Fair Booth – Our night to work in the Vienna Civic Club booth at the Dixie Classic Fair this year is Wednesday, Oct. 6.

The Civic Club is very generous to our Troop every year and we enjoy helping in their food concession stand at the Fair. It’s another way we enjoy the Fellowship of Scouting and help the community at the same time.

Tim Lasley is coordinating our workers again this year and we need at least 8 adults to help out on Oct. 6. There will be a sign-up sheet at Tuesday’s popcorn meeting.

Tim is also looking for some help on other evenings/days if you have some time and can help out.

Mr. Holder is organizing the Troop Junior Leader Training for the weekend of Oct.16. As a leader of our Troop you ARE EXPECTED to attend this training session, He is working to make it convenient for everyone (well, most everyone) and your commitment to this important part of your leadership is appreciated.

District Camporee – Our next camping trip is the Piedmont District Camporee here in Winston-Salem the weekend of Oct. 20-31.

The Camporee theme is “Brownsea Island” and feature competitions including Hog Wrestling (knots and lashings), Flapjack flipping, Emergency First Aid, Tracking and Tree Identification. We will spend some of our October meetings preparing our skills for the Camporee!

We will continue our sign-up on Tuesday. The final sign-up deadline is Tuesday, Oct. 12.

Veteran’s Day Parade – We will be marching as a Troop in this year’s Veteran’s Day Parade on Nov. 13 in downtown Winston-Salem. The parade begins at 10 a.m., which will give you plenty of time to march in the parade to honor our veterans and have the afternoon for other activities.

Sign-up for the Parade will be at our Troop meeting on October 5.

Troop 919 Notes 9-20-10

Troop Elections – Reminder to all Scouts that our Troop elections will be held at Tuesday’s Troop meeting (9/21). We will be electing our Assistant Patrol Leader, Troop Scribe, Troop Quartermaster and Patrol Leadership positions. Noah B., currently our ASPL, will be assuming the role of Senior Patrol Leader beginning with next week’s meeting.

All candidates for ASPL must have completed a Scoutmaster Conference prior to Tuesday’s Troop meeting.

OA Fall Fellowship – Wahissa Lodge’s Fall Fellowship is this weekend at Camp Raven Knob. All Order of the Arrow members are encouraged to attend this fun weekend.

This FUN weekend includes quest events (games), chapter compeitions, officer elections, patches, food, fellowship, a patch auction and NO WORK!!!! The cost for the weekend is $20 all meals and cracker barrells for the week and a collectible event patch. Registration begins at 7 p.m. on Friday in the dining hall. If you can't make it up on Friday, come on Saturday morning!

Let’s plan to take a LARGE contingent from Troop 919 to Fall Fellowship.

Popcorn – Our Troop Popcorn kickoff meeting is next week! Can’t wait to see what tricks our Popcorn Kernels have up their sleeves this year! The popcorn meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at Brookstown Methodist Church.

The first day to sell popcorn is Saturday, Oct. 1 and the sale concludes on Sunday, Oct. 31.

Big Sweep – The North Carolina Big Sweep is Saturday, Oct. 2 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Big Sweep is a great opportunity to help clean up our local waterways and earn Scouting service hours on the same day!

District Camporee – We are making a change to our October camping trip plans. We are now going to be attending the Piedmont District Camporee here in Winston-Salem the weekend of Oct. 20-31.

Camporee sign-up is at Tuesday’s (9/21) Troop meeting.

Veteran’s Day Parade – The Troop PLC decided on Thursday that we would march in this year’s Veteran’s Day Parade on Nov. 13 in downtown Winston-Salem. The parade begins at 10 a.m., which will give you plenty of time to march in the parade to honor our veterans and have the afternoon for other activities.

Sign-up for the Parade will be at our Troop meeting on October 5.

Troop 919 NOte 9-15-10 PLC & Bike Trip

Bike Trip – Our New River Trail bike trip is this weekend. We will meet at the Scout Hut at 8 a.m. on Saturday to load our camping gear and bicycles. We will return on Sunday afternoon.

The bike you take on this trip must be a bike with multiple gears and handle brakes (NO COASTER BRAKES) and it must have a safety inspection before going on the trip. We are requiring all riders to take their bikes to CycleTheraphy in Lewisville for a complimentary safety inspection prior to the trip.

In addition to the safety inspection each rider must carry a replacement tube that fits the wheels on THEIR bike and you must have the tools to change the tire on YOUR bike.

The following Scouts are riding the trail: Devin B., Noah B., Zach H., Caleb W., Kameron R., Adam H., Thomas L., Tripp H., Teige A., Brandon S., Kevin A., Lucas B., Ben G.

The following adults are going on this trip: Steve Tucker, Tim Lasley, Bill Brewer, Jeff Rice, Don Wright, Richard DeHeck.

All riders must bring their own trail lunch, trail snacks, rain gear and plenty of water for the 25 mile ride on Saturday. Most riders prefer to ride with a small backpack.

The trip plan is for the Raven Scouts to ride only on Saturday and work on Scout Skills for rank advancement on Sunday.

Patrol Leaders Conference – The September Patrol Leaders Conference is scheduled for 6 p.m on Thursday (9/16). All Patrol must be represented at this meeting as we will plan our October troop meetings to prepare for the District Camporee on Oct. 29-31.

Troop Committee – There will NOT be a Troop Committee meeting on Thursday.

Troop Elections - Our Troop Elections are Tuesday (9/21) and if you are planning to run for Ass’t Senior Patrol Leader, you must schedule a Scoutmaster Conference prior to Tuesday.

We have modified our Troop election procedures and now will elect only the Ass’t Senior Patrol Leader who will become the Senior Patrol Leader at the end of his ASPL term. This change is designed to give our youth leaders more leadership experience and to better prepare him for leading our Troop. With this modification, the elected ASPL is making a one year leadership commitment to the Troop.

No Scoutmaster conferences for elections will be held on Tuesday.

Scoutmaster Conferences are available at Thursday’s PLC meeting.

Troop 919 Notes - Brookstown Days and Bike Inspections

Brookstown Festival – Our Troop will be volunteering at the Brookstown Festival on Saturday. The Following Scouts signed to help at Tuesday’s Troop meeting.

Leaders: John Burgiss, Michael Hough

If you were not able to sign up on Tuesday and would like to assist, meet at Brookstown on Saturday morning.

Scouts and leaders should be at the church at 8 a.m. on Saturday.

Bike Trip – The following Scouts have signed up for next weekend’s bike trip.

Adults: The adults did not sign up for this trip on Tuesday. If you are able to participate on this trip as a leader, please reply to this e-mail.

Many thanks to Mike Cobler at CycleTherapy in Lewisville for the bike safety presentation on Tuesday and for providing complimentary safety inspections for our bikes.

All participants on the trip MUST have a safety inspection on their bike completed before the trip. Each rider also must carry a replacement tube for his bike and have the appropriate tools to change the tire on his bike if necessary. If you need to purchase supplies CycleTherapy is also offering a Scout discount. Be sure to identify yourself as a member of Troop 919.

Troop 919 Note 9-6-10

Picnic and COH - Thanks to everyone for all of the great food at our Troop picnic and Court of Honor last week. A special thank you to the Brookstown Methodist Men for their help in cooking our burgers and dogs and the anonymous donor who furnished the burgers, dogs and buns.

Bike Trip – Our bike trip is scheduled for Sept. 18-19. We will have the sign-up for the Bike Trip at Tuesday’s meeting.

One of the requirements for this trip is to have a bike with at least 5 gears and cable brakes. Bikes with coaster brakes are not acceptable for this trip. Another requirement is for each Scout going on the trip to have their bike complete a safety inspection with a local bike shop. We are working with several bike shops to help arrange the safety inspections.

Brookstown Days – Our Troop will be helping at the Brookstown Days Festival at Brookstown United Methodist Church on Saturday.

Sign-up to help at Brookstown Days on Tuesday…it’s one way to earn service hours, plus help our sponsoring church.

Our Troop also will be presenting the colors at Brookstown Days on Saturday morning.

Second Harvest Food Bank – There is also an opportunity for Scouts to volunteer at Second Harvest Food Bank on Saturday afternoon.

The project is repacking rice and filling food boxes at the Second Harvest Food Bank. The age limit is 12 and all scouts should wear class "b" and represent their troop. Limited to 40 volunteers (first come, first served), so anyone interested should register with Harriet Rhoades 784-5770.

Troop Elections – Our Troop elections are scheduled for Sept. 21.

There is a modification to our election procedure beginning with this election that will be discussed at Tuesday’s Troop meeting. If you are interested in running for a Troop or Patrol position, you should attend Tuesday’s meeting.

Popcorn Kickoff – Here’s another important Troop meeting. The kickoff meeting for our annual popcorn sale is Tuesday, September 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall at Brookstown United Methodist Church. Please mark this important date on your calendar!!!

We are asking that each Scout family is represented at the popcorn kickoff to learn about this year’s program and hear about new and exciting products being offered by Trails End. The first day to sell popcorn is Oct.1 and the final day to sell popcorn is Oct. 31.

Our Troops depends heavily on the annual popcorn sale to fund our Troop activities, including maintaining the Scout Hut and trailer, providing program, and purchasing equipment. Thanks to all Troop 919 Scout family for making the Troop popcorn sale a high priority in their charity solicitations this fall.

We’re banking on our popcorn kernel Scott Gryder and his team having some delicious Trails End samples for the this meeting!
