Troop 919 Notes1-29-2012
Klondike Derby – Our team at this past weekend’s Klondike Derby may have been small but it was “mighty.” The Scouts attending had a great time. If you weren’t there, you missed a fun weekend. Let’s make plans now for next year’s Derby!
Thanks to the Chuck Harmon, Tom Hardin, Bill Brewer and Jimmy Holder for their leadership on the trip.
Scouting for Food – This Saturday is the first day of our Scouting for Food good turn service project for this year. With so many hungry families in our community, let’s all make a special effort to pitch in for Scouting for Food and help those who may not be sure where their next meal may come from.
Scouts are encouraged to bring along families and friends to help with the Scouting for Food project. It’s a simple commitment of a couple of hours on two Saturday mornings….it’s a service project and you will be doing your duty to your community.
Bag Delivery [This Saturday, February 4] – Meet at the Scout Hut at 9 a.m. on Saturday to pick up bags and get your route assignment. You will be leaving Scouting for Food bags on your neighbors doors and returning the following Saturday to collect the filled bags.
Bag Pick Up [Saturday, February 11] – Meet at the Scout Hut at 9 a.m. on Saturday, February 11 to return to our neighborhoods to collect the filled bags!
It is very helpful when Scouts and their teams commit to both Saturdays. This helps us to ensure we return to all homes where bags were placed the previous Saturday.
We are also recruiting drivers to help drive Scouts through the neighborhoods during Scouting for Food. Thanks in advance for your willingness to help.
Our Troop will be donating our collected food to the Second Harvest Food Bank. A group our Scouts and Order of the Arrow members will be heading out to Second Harvest Food Bank later that afternoon to help sort food and enjoy a little Native American dancing. If you think you might like to learn about – or even try your hand {feet} at the Native American dancing like you see on Wednesday night at camp – come on out Saturday afternoon.
Scout Sunday – Our first Scout Sunday this year is this Sunday at Brookstown United Methodist Church. Brookstown’s worship service begins at 11:00 a.m.
Scouts will have an opportunity to participate in the service. We need Scouts to volunteer to fill these roles in Sunday’s service:
Ushers (4)
Acolyte
Color Guard (3) and Pledge of Allegiance
Read Scripture
Offertory Prayer
We will be attending worship services at Olivet Moravian Church on Sunday, February 19. Olivet’s service begins at 11:00 a.m. also.
Ski Trip – The Winterplace Ski Trip is Sunday, February 12. Skiing, Snowboarding and Snow Tubing offered in the following packages:
Skiing [$60] – All Day lift ticket, rental equipment (including helmet as required by BSA Guide to Safe Scouting), meal voucher and 90-minute skiing lesson.
Snowboarding [$100] – All Day lift ticket, rental equipment (including helmet as required by BSA Guide to Safe Scouting), meal voucher and 90-minute skiing lesson.
Snow Tubing – [$43 plus $6 helmet rental] – All day tubing and meal voucher. Helmet rental is not included in the package.
Activity Consent Form - The Activity Consent Form is attached to this e-mail and will be required for all youth participants.
This one day trip is open to family members and Scouts. All skiing must be paid in advance.
Re-Chartering - The annual Old Hickory Council/BSA Re-Chartering fee is now due! If you have not paid your re-chartering fee, please bring it to Tuesday's meeting. The Re-Chartering fee is $15, plus $12 for Boys Life if you would like to subscribe to Boys Life.
Summer Camp - We will begin accepting your Camp Raven Knob summer camp deposit ($100) at our Troop meeting on February 7. We will be attending summer camp the week of July 15-July 23. Family night at at camp is Wednesday, July 18. Mark your calendars!
Court of Honor – Our next Troop Court of Honor will be on Tuesday, February 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at Brookstown Methodist Church.
Please keep this in mind if you are close to completing requirements for a merit badge or rank advancement.

Troop 919 Notes 1-22-2012
Klondike Derby – Our Troop will be participating in this weekend’s Piedmont/Salem District Klondike Derby and Tuesday’s meeting will be busy preparing for this fun event, including:
Signup – If you would like to attend this trip, be sure to be present at Tuesday’s Troop meeting. In addition to the signup we will also be assigning patrols for Saturday’s Klondike competition.
Menu Planning – Everyone going on the trip should also be a part of the menu planning activity. This gives YOU a voice in the menu for the weekend!
Sled Prep – We’ve dug out our Troop’s Klondike Derby sleds, and yep, the need a little work and some paint. There will be chance to try your hand at painting (or at least touching up) our sleds Tuesday evening, so come to the meeting prepared to help with the painting. This means that you should wear old clothes that you can get messy…and yes it means you may be excused from wearing your Class A uniform if you are going to be painting.
Activity Consent Form - The Activity Consent Form is attached to this e-mail and will be required for all youth participants.
We will meet at the Scout Hut at 6 p.m. on Friday (Jan. 27) to depart for the Kloindike Derby and should return around lunchtime on Sunday (Jan. 29). Please eat dinner before arriving at the Scout Hut on Friday.

Scout Sunday – It’s also that time of year for Scout Sunday and our Troop plans to worship with both of our Chartered Organization Partners – Olivet Moravian Church and Brookstown United Methodist Church again this year.
We attend church as a group at Brooktstown Methodist Church on Sunday, February 5 and will attend services at Olivet Moravian Church on Sunday, February 19.
We will also be asking Scouts to participate in both services.
Troop Committee Meeting – The Troop 919 Troop Committee is changing its meeting time! The Troop Committee will now meet on the third Sunday of each month at 3 p.m. at the Scout Hut. We are in hopes this new meeting time will allow committee members whom have not been able to be as active as they would like to attend the meeting and be active in our Troop operations.
Troop committee members will continue to be available to Scouts for a Board of Review during the Troop’s Patrol Leader Conference at 6 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month.

Troop 919 Snow Camping/Winter Camping Update 1-13-2012
Snow Camping (Winter Camping) Update
The Troop will meet at 9 a.m. at the Scout Hut on Saturday (1/14/2012) to depart for its annual snow camping/winter camping trip. We will be returing on MONDAY, January 16 in the early Afternoon
The following Scouts and Leaders are participating in this trip:
Scouts: Ben S., Aiden C., Alex C., Chase H., Ian S., Paul L., Austin D., Lucas B., Patrick B., Chris W. and Keegan W.
Leaders: Mike Warner, Jay Harmel, Tom Hardin, Bill Brewer, Mark Scott and Jimmy Holder
These Scouts have not submitted their signed activity consent form for this trip. You will not be able to go on this trip if the Troop doesn't have a completed and signed activity consent form. Please make sure you bring it with you on Saturday morning.

Welcome Back – We hope you have enjoyed your Christmas vacation and are eager to return to Scouting and school. Our weekly Troop meetings resume Tuesday!
Snow Camping – Our annual snow camping to Caanan Valley in Davis, WV is the weekend of January 14-16. We will be departing from the Scout Hut early on Saturday morning and return in the late afternoon or early evening on Monday, January 16.
If you are going on this trip, it’s important that you attend this week’s Troop meeting so the Troop can ensure everyone is ready for the trip, and next week’s menu planning meeting.
The following Scouts and Leaders have signed up to attend this trip:

The required BSA Activity Consent Form is attached. Please bring the completed form to Tuesday’s Troop meeting.
Public Safety Merit Badges – The Piedmont District and the Winston-Salem Police Dept.’s Crime Prevention Unit are teaming up again in 2012 to offer four public safety merit badges. The merit badges will be offered on the following dates:
January 24 – Crime Prevention
February 20 – Traffic Safety
March 19 – Safety
April 28 – Finger Printing
The Crime Prevention Merit Badge will be offered on Tuesday, January 24 from 5:45 – 8:00 PM in the Winston-Salem Public Safety Center on Cherry Street. To reserve your spot in this course, contact Winston-Salem Police Officer Jonathan Lewis by e-mail: jlewis@wspd.org (please include merit badge in the subject line) or telephone: (336) 773-7935
The reservation deadline for the Crime Prevention merit badge is January 19.
Weather Spotter Training - Become a weather spotter and learn to identify severe weather patterns and report your findings to the National Weather Service.
The National Weather Service will present the BASIC SKYWARN Severe Weather Spotter program to help participants understand the warning process. Discussions of how and why buildings fail in high winds as well as thunderstorm development and severity will be covered. Attendees will learn to recognize cloud elements of developing thunderstorms and be able to determine storm motion, intensity and severity based on cloud structure.
The course is being offered on two different dates:
February 7 – 7:00 – 9:00 PM
February 16– 3:00 – 5:00 PM

Boy Scout Re-Chartering – Our Boy Scout Re-Charting fee ($15) must be paid by February. Our Troop is ready to begin accepting your re-chartering fee.
