Troop 919 Notes 2-26-2012
Reminder Court of Honor Rescheduled to March 6 Reminder
Bear Island – Our canoe trip to Bear Island is this weekend. Please meet at the Scout Hut on Friday (March 2) at 6 p.m.to depart for the trip. We will head to Camp Boddie and camp on Friday night and pick up canoes before heading to Bear Island on Saturday morning. Scouts should eat dinner before arriving at the Scout Hut.
The following are signed up for the Bear Island trip:
Scouts: Michael B., Alex C., Tyler W., Ben S., Caleb S., Nick M., Andy N., Raymond F., Alexander Z., Avery C., and Chris W.
Leaders: Andrew Carr, Mike Warner, John Strong, Jay Harmel, Richard DeHeck and Tim Lasley
Menu planning for this trip is Tuesday. If you are going on this trip, please be at Tuesday’s meeting to help with the menu planning for your trip.
We will be making a couple convenience stops on the trip. Scouts should bring along some ca$h.
Court of Honor – Our Winter Court of Honor will be on Tuesday, March 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at Brookstown Methodist Church. If you are close to completing a merit badge or rank advancement, be sure to have it completed in time to be presented at the Court of Honor.
Friends of Scouting - Our Troop families are encouraged to attend the Friends of Scouting presentation at our Court of Honor on March 6.
Each year our Troop families are asked to help support the administrative side of the local Scouting program with a pledge to the Old Hickory Council’s Friends of Scouting program. The $15 national registration each of us pays every year is just the “tip of the Scouting iceburg.” In other words, it takes a lot more to keep Scouting going locally. Our commitment to the Friends of Scouting program helps to keep the cost of Scouting reasonable, provides administrative support and training for adult volunteers.
Summer Camp – The $100 Summer Camp deposit now due! Please bring your deposit to Tuesday’s Troop meeting.
Medical Forms – The BSA requires that we have a current annual health and medical record form on file for each Scout and leader. It is now time for each Troop 919 Scout and Leader to have their medical form updated. The BSA Health and Medical Form can be downloaded here.
Troop Elections – With our Court of Honor date change, the schedule for the Spring Troop elections also needs to be modified. Troop elections will now be held on Tuesday, March 13.

Schedule Changes
Court of Honor – March 6
Troop Elections – March 13
Our Troop 919 Winter Court of Honor has been rescheduled to Tuesday, March 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at Brookstown Methodist Church. Scouts are reminded to bring snacks and drinks!
We will be holding our annual Friends and Families of Scouting presentation at this meeting and all Troop 919 Scout families are encouraged to attend and participate in the FOS program. Our local Scouting program is funded in large part by the participation in the Friends of Scouting program by local Troop families like ours. With our generous financial support of the Old Hickory Council, Scouting is one of the most affordable and effective youth programs in Forsyth County.
Bear Island Trip – The Bear Island Canoe Trip is confirmed for the weekend of March 2-4. If you have not signed up for this trip, Tuesday is your final opportunity. Menu planning for the Bear Island trip is Tuesday, Feb. 28.

Summer Camp Deposit – It’s also time to get your deposit in for summer camp at Camp Raven Knob. This year’s summer camp fee is $245, plus any additional program fees. Your deposit of $100 holds your spot with our Troop at Raven Knob.
Scout Sunday – Thanks to all of our Scout families for your commitment to both of our Scout Sunday services. We enjoyed outstanding support from Troop 919 at our services at Brookstown Methodist and Olivet Moravian churches.

Troop 919 Notes 2-12-2012
Bear Island – Final Sing-upfor the March 3 Bear Island Canoe Trip will be at Tuesday’s Troop meeting!
If we don’t have a sizeable Scout commitment for this trip we will change the March trip to a local trip. We will still be camping the weekend of March 3-4, but will not make the commitment to travel to the coast with a small group. There are a lot of logistics involved in this trip and we must make arrangements this coming week.
Scout Sunday – We will be attending Scout Sunday as a Troop at Olivet Moravian Church on Sunday (Feb. 19). All Troop 919 families are encouraged to attend Sunday’s service with the Troop.
Olivet’s Sunday service begins at 11:00 a.m. Scouts participating in the service (ushers, color guard, etc.) are asked to be at the church at 10:30 a.m.
Scouting for Food – Thanks to all who came out of Saturday to help with our Scouting for Food collections. Troop 919, Crew 919 and Pack 919 collected more than a half-ton of food on Saturday! We had almost 50 Scouts and their families participating in our Scouting for Food program. That’s a commitment of almost 300 Good Turn hours of service to our community and more importantly a nice collection of food for those in Northwest North Carolina who may be wondering where their next meal might come from. Thanks for your commitment to the community!!!!
Pow Wow Fun – Thanks to the Troop 919 OA members who took the leadership roles in putting together Saturday’s Pow Wow at the Second Harvest Food Bank. It was an evening great fun that included Native American dancing, singing, delicious chicken, beef and cabbage stew and a fun desert dutch oven cook off.
…and Troop 919 / Crew 919 swept the dutch oven desert cookoff! Thanks to Stan Gordon, Bill Brewer and Tim Lasley for showing off their skills!
Plus….we collected another 500 pounds of food for the Second Harvest Food Bank!
Eagle Court of Honor – Mark your Calendars! Tripp H. will be awarded his Eagle Scout rank at Brookstown Methodist Church on Sunday afternoon, March 4. Tripp will have the details at Tuesday’s Troop meeting.
Summer Camp Deposit – It’s time to pay your summer camp deposit! Please bring your payment to Tuesday’s Troop Meeting. The deposit is $100.
Our 2012 summer camp dates are July 15-21.
Re-Chartering Time – It’s also time to pay your BSA rechartering for 2012. Rechartering is $15 and Boys Life is $12.
Charity Hockey Game - For the last several years Mr. Gordon has arranged a sponsor for any Troop 919 Scout and his family who would like to attend the DOCS vs COPS charity hockey game at the Joel Coliseum. The game will be played on March 24 and his friend is offering to sponsor us again this year.
We need to give Mr. Gordon a ticket count this week. If you and your family would like to attend this event, tell Mr. Gordon how many tickets you would like. Only one simple request...if you ask for tickets, please plan to use them. His friend pays for these tickets and is willing to sponsor anyone from Troop 919 who would like to attend this fun evening.

Troop 919 Message
Scouting for Food – Thanks to all who came out of Saturday to help with bag delivery portion of Scouting for Food. We had a great turnout and we appreciate the help from Venture Crew 919 and Cub Pack 919!
We also need your help this Saturday when we return to the neighborhoods to collect the filled bags! If you help deliver bags, please come back this Saturday to help retrieve the food.

We also need adult drivers on Saturday. If you drove this past Saturday, hopefully you will be able to return to drive again and ensure we collect food from all neighborhoods where we distributed Scouting for Food bags.
Saturday Afternoon Pow Wow and Fun – Our Order of the Arrow Chapter will be hosting a fun afternoon of Native American actives on Saturday at the Second Harvest Food Bank. This will be a fun afternoon and learning environment and the OA guys are inviting our Troop families and friends to come out and enjoy the fun.
Many of our Troop members are the guys you see dancing , drumming and singing on Wednesday evening at summer camp and they are encouraging our Troop to come out and have some fun on Saturday. It will be a great place to learn a few dance steps or try your hand at drumming or singing! Come on out even if you don’t want to dance or sing!
Admission to the event is just five cans of food. There will also be a chicken stew and adults are you are encouraged to participate in a dutch oven desert competition.Bring your best recipe, dutch oven, ingredients, serving bowls, etc.!
OA Members: Help is needed with set up, parking and clean up. Give Chris W a call to help out.
Ski Trip – Tuesday is your FINAL chance to sign up and PAY for the Winterplace Ski Trip on Sunday, February 12. Skiing, Snowboarding and Snow Tubing offered in the following packages:
Skiing [$60] – All Day lift ticket, rental equipment (including helmet as required by BSA Guide to Safe Scouting), meal voucher and 90-minute skiing lesson.
Snowboarding [$100] – All Day lift ticket, rental equipment (including helmet as required by BSA Guide to Safe Scouting), meal voucher and 90-minute skiing lesson.
Snow Tubing – [$43 plus $6 helmet rental] – All day tubing and meal voucher. Helmet rental is not included in the package.
All participants have to submit a completed WinterPlace liability release form and BSA Activity Consent Form before departure on Sunday. We request that both of these form be completed when you pay on Tuesday. This one day trip is open to family members and Scouts. All skiing must be paid in advance.
We will meet at the Scout Hut at 5:30 AM on Sunday to depart for Winterplace and will return in the early evening.
Scout Sunday – Thanks to all of the Scouts and families who participated in Scout Sunday at Brookstown United Methodist Church on Sunday. We will be attending church at Olivet Moravian Church as a Troop on Sunday, February 19.
Scouts will be asked to fill the following roles for the service: Ushers, color guard, read scripture, offertory prayer.

S C O U T I N G F O R F O O D
CALLING ALL TROOP 919 SCOUTS AND FAMILIES
We are asking our Troop 919 families to make a commitment to do a good turn and become an active participant in our Scouting for Food project over the next two weekends. It’s a small time commitment that returns huge results.
Scouting for Food is a two-day project. This Saturday (tomorrow) we canvas our neighborhoods and leave Scouting for Food bags on our neighbors’ door, asking them to generously donate non-perishable foods. We will return the following Saturday (Feb. 11) to collect the filled bags.
Scouts usually spend about two hours each Saturday on this project, and like most Scouting projects, it’s more fun than work!
This is a project where the entire family can equally participate, so bring along mom, dad, brother and sister. We also need volunteer adult drivers to successfully complete this project.
The Old Hickory Council has a goal of collecting 100,000 pounds of food during the Scouting for Food project. Let’s make sure we do our part!
Something for you to think about as you prepare to head out on your Scouting for Food rounds on Saturday morning…
Across Northwestern North Carolina there are nearly 300,000 people are at risk of hunger, one-third of which are children. Today, 1 in 7 Americans is food insecure, which means they cannot reliably say from where their next meal is coming. Food is a basic need - the fuel we need to survive and thrive. Hungry children can't learn and hungry adults can't work and live productively.
Hunger in our communities is largely hidden. But whether it involves a parent skipping meals, eating less than is needed to live a healthy life or making due with foods that are filling but lack nutrition, its affects can be devastating, especially among our more vulnerable citizens, including children and older adults.
Children are especially vulnerable to issues of hunger and poverty. Research indicates that even mild under-nutrition experienced by young children during critical periods of growth may lead to reductions in physical growth and affect brain development. A child who is unequipped to learn because of hunger and poverty is more likely to be poor as an adult. As such, the existence of childhood hunger in the United States threatens future American prosperity.
Scout Sunday – Troop 919 Scouts and families are encouraged to attend Scout Sunday with our Troop on Sunday (Feb. 5) at Brookstown United Methodist Church. Brookstown worship service begins at 11 a.m. Brookstown Methodist and Oliver Moravian Church sponsor our Scout Troop.
The following Scouts volunteered to participate in Sunday’s service and are asked to arrive at Brookstown by 10:30 a.m.

The youth group at Brookstown will also be collecting funds for Souper Sunday , so bring along your spare change….especially the kind that folds and doesn’t make noise when it hits the bucket!!
